HSDPA – ultimate mobility without the bloat
July4
T-Mobile’s iPhone Tariff together with a cheap and fast modem (with all the latest acronyms: HUAWEI USB Stick featuring GPRS, UMTS, HSDPA and HSUPA) make up the wet dream of mobile internet workers.
If you are running with Windows and this HUAWEI E170/E172 (depending on T-Mobile or Vodafone branding) I have a treat for you:
- Flash the stick to get rid of bloat an get mean & lean drivers. Latest firmware here.
- Instead of installing 111MB of Software get yourself MWconn here.
- If you have flashed the HUAWEI firmware (this is what I did) then you will find a folder “Mobile partner” on the external drive of the stick. There you’ll find a file called “data.bin”
- Copy this to your desktop, rename it to “data.zip” and unpack it.
- Deep down in this ZIP you’ll find a folder called “Driver”.
- Enter this folder, and start “driversetup.exe” to set up the com-ports and get the drivers at the required places.
Voilá, worked like a charm. Maybe, after finishing the install, you have to remove and replug the stick and wait for 30+ sec. It took a while until the stick has been discovered correctly.
