iPhone Ringtones – BYO & á la carte
August6
How to create your own ringtones for the Apple iPhone.
- Select the desired soundtrack/song in iTunes.
- Right-click on it, click ‘Get info’, ‘Options’.
- By setting the desired ‘Start’ and ‘End time’ mark the most suitable part of the track. It should not exceed 39 seconds. Click ‘Ok’.
- In the iTunes Menu Bar select ‘Advanced’ and click ‘Convert Selection to AAC’. This process takes a few secondes and will result in a second track with the same name and the desired length (remember, ringtones need to be shorter than 40 secs).
- Drag and drop the short track on you desktop. Delete it in iTunes and change back ‘Start’ and ‘End Time’ of the original track.
- On the desktop, change the file ending from ‘.m4a’ to ‘.m4r’ (<em>r</em> as in ringtone). Aprove the change if Finder/Windows bugs you. Maybe Windows hides the file endings, you need to show them via changing ‘Extras’, ‘folder settings’ or something (sorry, I am not on Windows).
- Move the renamed file, something like ‘myrington.m4r’ back into iTunes. If you have enabled the ‘Ringtones’ category in your library you will immediately see your new ringtone.
- Set up syncing your ringtones with your iPhone and sync.
- On the iPhone select your new ringtone in ‘Settings’, ‘Sounds’ and guess what: ‘Ringtones’. Enjoy!
